Short answer: Cloudflare puts a global network in front of your website to speed it up and absorb attacks. Its free plan includes DNS, a CDN, universal SSL certificates, unmetered DDoS protection and a managed set of firewall rules — more than enough for most small sites. Paid plans (Pro from about $20/month billed annually, Business from about $200/month) add a fuller web application firewall, image optimization, more rules and support. For most website owners, putting a site behind Cloudflare is one of the highest-value free security steps available.

What Cloudflare protects against

  • DDoS attacks at the network and application layers.
  • Common web attacks (SQL injection, cross-site scripting) via the WAF.
  • Bots and scrapers through bot management and challenge pages.
  • Exposure of your origin server's IP — if configured correctly, attackers can't bypass Cloudflare to hit your server directly.

Setup checklist for a small website

  1. Add your site and switch your domain's nameservers to Cloudflare.
  2. Set SSL/TLS mode to "Full (strict)" with a valid certificate on your origin — avoid "Flexible", which leaves traffic between Cloudflare and your server unencrypted.
  3. Enable "Always Use HTTPS" and HSTS once everything works over HTTPS.
  4. Turn on the free managed WAF rules and bot fight mode as appropriate.
  5. Lock down your origin: allow web traffic only from Cloudflare's IP ranges, or use Cloudflare Tunnel so the server has no open inbound ports.
  6. Enable 2FA on your Cloudflare account — it controls your DNS.
  7. Check your domain's email and TLS setup with our Domain Security Report.

Things to know

  • Cloudflare sees your traffic (it terminates TLS to inspect and cache it). That's normal for a CDN/WAF, but worth knowing.
  • Outages affect many sites at once, as rare incidents have shown.
  • Over-aggressive bot settings can block legitimate crawlers — check that search engines and AI crawlers you want aren't challenged.

Verdict

Cloudflare's free plan delivers performance and security that would have cost thousands a decade ago. Most small and mid-sized sites should use it; upgrade to Pro when you need the full managed WAF or image optimization.
